VKI-Instrumentation service makes use of licensed aerospace-oriented CAD software and CFD solvers. Moreover, VKI has access to the latest evolution of the in-house optimizer CADO in both, its evolutionary and adjoint configuration.

      The VKI has developed a Computer Aided Design Optimization (CADO) tool using numerical optimization algorithms and high fidelity evaluation tools such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) to rapidly design and optimize turbomachinery components and instrumentation. It is the perfect tool to improve the performance of existing designs or for designing new innovative components in a reduced time to market.

      The strength of this tool lies in the multi-disciplinary approach, which considers simultaneously all different involved disciplines, including aerodynamics, structural mechanics, vibration, noise, heat transfer etc. Optimization is provided using classical gradient free optimization methods such as metamodel assisted surrogate models, and has been recently extended to gradient based optimization methods. The benefits of the latter are significant with a design cost that is equivalent to roughly only 10 CFD evaluations.
